Summary: Every fashion brand needs to reinvent itself, including the latest trends and styles in its collections. The latest to join the trends wagon is the style inspired by the 2000s, which featured experimental clothing inspired by reality shows and celebrities. Trucker hats, tracksuits, classic rock tees, light-wash bootcut jeans, and polo shirts are making a strong comeback this season.
Every few years, fashion goes through a major change in terms of trends. This is true for both – street style and runway fashion. Designers and experts familiar with the trade know that these styles eventually make a comeback. It could be in just a few years, or a couple of decades later.
Recent runway trends are hinting at a resurgence of fashion from the 2000s, which is fun yet stylish, cool yet functional. The period saw the rise of early influencers. This meant more people started emulating the style of celebrities, and brands churned out outfits based on runway styles in what came to be known as ‘fast fashion.’
Here, we speak about trends popular in the Y2K era, which can be used to create a 2000s Fashion collection this season.
While 2000s fashion saw major red-carpet moments as celebrities constantly experimented with looks, the turn of the millennium did actually set the trends for a very hands-on approach to fashion. Functional garments made of future-ready materials that are seeing an upswing today first emerged in the early 2000s. Designers and retailers should be looking at outfits that are both comfortable and contemporary.
As the name itself suggests, fast fashion disappeared as soon as it came up. This meant constantly changing styles through the decade. Fashion designers looking to model their collections from the decade will need to create a mix of styles. What was in trend during the early 2000s may sit in stark contrast to the latter part of the decade.
While Britney ruled pop culture through her music and style, there also were Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Mariah Carey, and Blair Waldorf of the Gossip Girl. All these trendsetters of the early 2000s sported looks that were both fashionable and fun, a la street style. Popular looks sported by these celebs featured dresses over jeans, capri pants, cropped jackets, low-rise jeans, cowl-neck shirts, graphic t-shirts, and yoga pants. These went with platform boots, aviator sunglasses, and chunky belts.
Not to be missed, there were the pocketless low-rise jeans that let the wearer show off their stylish flip-phones while bringing attention to their butt at the same time! The bare midriff also emerged around this time, with crop tops, mesh tops, and tops made of handkerchiefs becoming popular.
Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian popularised athleisure in the 2000s. Tracksuits by Juicy Couture were all the rage then, and have made a comeback of late. Tech impacted fashion in the early aughts, showcased through a color palette infused with reflective metallics and shiny blacks. There were shiny pants and leather pants on one hand, and then there was the immensely comfortable yet stylish tracksuit. They even clubbed the two styles, where brightly-colored tracksuits featured rhinestone logos. Tracksuits can be loose or fitted, and simple track pants combined with other styles could also work for both men and women.
For patrons who’d prefer darker styles, designers can experiment with the emo-style of the early aughts that were sported by the likes of Avril Lavinge. Back then, emo fashion meant all-black outfits and nails painted black, and the look was completed with safety pin accents or studded belts. Now, it’s gotten a bit of a makeover and takes a cue from anime and K-pop. The aesthetic is still associated with dark colors. Include black-leather pieces and delve into a bit of goth too. Scene fashion saw punk, rave, and Indie-inspired outfits in the late 2000s. Take for example hoodies, bright t-shirts, and black biker jeans!
With 2000s fashion demanding a mix of styles, designers and brands would need to source from different suppliers. To create a collection that covers all these styles, it is also essential to collaborate with partners who can help execute your vision.
