Creativity comes naturally to Jerry Lorenzo, who did not have any formal training as a fashion designer. Born on October 5, 1977, to MLB player Jerry Manuel, Lorenzo spent most of his growing-up years traveling to be close to his father. Jerry Lorenzo's mother used to drive all the children across the country to training-camp locations where his father was imparting training in the spring. Most of the better-paid baseball players lived in mansions; however, Lorenzo's family couldn't even afford plane tickets to the training camp locations.

Jerry Lorenzo came to the world of fashion accidentally. He got through the MBA entrance exam at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. His days were busy in classes and case studies, and during the nights, he worked in the stockroom of Diesel to pay for his bills.

While working in Diesel, he was sent to the main floor one day, and he sold merchandise worth $5000. After that, the manager kept him on the retail store floor. After completing his MBA, he had a couple of stints at various places, and in 2008, he tried his hands on being a party promoter in Los Angeles. This experience helped him understand more about contemporary fashion, and in 2012, he launched his own brand "Fear of God."

The Fashion Journey That Transformed Jerry Lorenzo

Working with Kanye West

The opportunity to work with the famous rapper Kanye West was the first break that gave a footing to Jerry Lorenzo's talent. Fashion designer Virgil Abloh asked Jerry Lorenzo to come to Atlantic City to show his debut collection to Kanye West, and he loved it. West hired him as a design consultant, and Jerry Lorenzo got an opportunity to work with A.P.C. in Paris, Yeezy Season One. and the Yeezus tour merch.

Established fashion designers noticed the designs he created during this collaboration, and he created quite a buzz.

Break at Barney's

When Jerry Lorenzo first started, he was introduced to the buyers at Barney's in Paris. They asked him to bring his collection to New York as it was not their buying calendar. Lorenzo was stepping into the fashion arena and didn't know about the seasonality of fashion buying by the big fashion houses.

He kept his promise and went to Barney's New York store and showed his collection to the fashion buyers there. The store made an exception to its own seasonal rule and bought his entire collection, inspired by "The Breakfast Club" and singer Kurt Cobain.

The fact that Barney's made an exception for Jerry Lorenzo's creations speaks volumes about his creativity and understanding of modern fashion.

Elongated T-Shirts

Another milestone contribution that Jerry Lorenzo has in fashion is his elongated T-shirts. "Man, I could see all the thought that went into this simple long tee." Kanye West was impressed by his concept of elongated T-shirts and advised him to include them in his collections too.

Short-Sleeved Hoodies

Hoodies always used to be full-sleeved, and Jerry Lorenzo broke that pattern. He has always been ready to experiment with the existing styles and develop new designs that the fashion community completely adores.

Flared Track Pants

Jerry Lorenzo introduced the fashion of flared track pants, giving the sportswear an evening-wear look. It became an instant hit as the comfort was kept intact and gave a stylish new look to track pants. Many started wearing this as casuals to markets and other evening strolling places, and Jerry once again became a household name.

Loungewear Space

For the last one and half years, when the world had to adapt to the work-from-home concept, Jerry Lorenzo ventured into the stylish unisex loungewear collection with his Fear of God home collection. In November 2021, the brand announced the launch of homely intimates, which will be available in two shades: cement and black. This unisex outfit will include oversized waffle-robe sleepwear, separates, and a pair of flexible boxer briefs. Keeping the comfort factor in mind, the fabric used in this collection is a blend of fine Italian knit, cotton, and silk.

Association with Ermenegildo Zegna

Collaboration with Italian designer Ermenegildo Zegna helped Jerry Lorenzo look beyond streetwear. Now his "Fear of God" brand proudly sports expensive suiting, high-end tailoring for the men and women of class. Motocross pants and rock T-shirts still form a large part of his collection; however, Italian virgin wool coats too were introduced in the clothesline.

This amalgamation of Italian sophistication and American practicality was another fusion that left a great mark for the designer in haute couture.

Association with Justin Bieber

Jerry Lorenzo's association with the teen icon Justin Bieber during his Purpose World Tour, which started on March 9, 2016, gave another boost to his creativity. He created five custom looks for the "Baby" singer to wear on stage during this tour. His inputs were instrumental in designing the tour merchandise.

The looks which Beiber donned during that music tour became a craze across the globe, and many labels copied the styles.

Jeans Riddled with Zippers and Holes

This has become commonplace in street fashion now. Torn jeans with holes and zippers designed by Jerry Lorenzo were loved by Gen Z and millennials a lot.

Denim and Sneakers

Jerry Lorenzo does not believe in following a norm, and he does not come out with a new collection as per the fashion calendar. His seventh collection was launched in August this year, and it included Denims and sneakers. From the New York Times to Vogue - everyone is going gaga over it. This collection also includes elevated knitwear, louche suiting, and loafers.

Fashion critics address Jerry Lorenzo as the savior of American Fashion, and many think that he is the second coming of Ralph Lauren. Celebrities like Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and John Mayer regularly sport outfits from the collection created for them by Jerry Lorenzo.
