Conventionally, the Met Gala is held on the first Monday of May at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are, however, some changes in the schedule for 2021. The event will be held in two parts: A compact, more intimate ceremony will take place on 13th of September, in congruences with New York Fashion Week. There's an emerging hope that this year the event would be hosted live and not virtually, all based on evolving public health guidelines.
The 2021 event will be followed up by the 2022 Gala returning to its usual first Monday in May spot on the calendar (in this case, May 2, 2022). The two events will be thematically linked.
Every year, the Met ball launches a new exhibition at the museum’s Costume Institute, which elects the dress code for the event. The 2021 Met Gala takes its theme from “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” a display that will open in the Anna Wintour Costume Center in September.
The display will be made-up around a fictional American house and will feature 20th and 21st century fashion pieces that “point out the customs and behaviors of the imagined occupants.” Part one is also meant to celebrate the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and will look into a modern vocabulary of American fashion.
The second exhibition, which will open in May 2022, is called “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” and will offer a more historic perspective, looking back to the 1670s. Both the exhibitions will run at the Met until September 2022.
Popular personalities from the spheres of music, cinema, Broadway and fashion are invited to the Met Gala. While the list changes every year, one can surely expect a star-studded event. The Met Ball is the fashion world's equivalent of the Oscars, an evening when designers, models, and Hollywood stars convene in the year’s most over-the-top couture and appearances.
American actor Timothée Chalamet, American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish, tennis dynamo Naomi Osaka, and American poet and activist Amanda S.C. Gorman will operate as the gala’s co-chairs, while fashion designer Tom Ford, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, and global editorial director of Vogue Anna Wintour will be the evening’s honorary chairs.
The dress code specified on the Met Gala invitations is reportedly “American Independence.” American Independence feels particularly meaningful after an isolating and challenging year. This year's Met Gala can be expected to flaunt a newfound sense of freedom: to socialize, to travel, and to get utterly dressed to the nines—or better, into the double digits.
